Our History

The Lake Havasu Gem & Mineral Club is the longest continually operating club in the area. It was established in 1969 and celebrated its 50th year anniversary in 2019.

The granite for the original London Bridge, built in the 1830s, came from Haytor, a large quarrying complex on the eastern side of Dartmoor, Devon, England. The granite was transported by tramway to the canal at Stover and then to Teignmouth, where it was used to construct the bridge and other famous buildings.

In 1968, American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge from the City of London and had the exterior granite blocks cut and transported to the United States for use in the construction of a new bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The first 855 tons of granite traveled 10,000 miles from London, through the Panama Canal, and to the Port of Los Angeles in California, arriving July 4, 1968. The blocks were then trucked 300 miles inland to Lake Havasu City. The new bridge is considered an outstanding example of 19th century masonry design and construction.

London Bridge granite, in various forms, is for sale at the Havasu Rocks Retail Store.
